Of everything in your wardrobe, the clothes you exercise in are the ones worth scrutinizing first. Not because activewear is uniquely toxic in what it's made of - most of it is the same synthetic material as the rest of the modern closet - but because of the conditions under which you wear it. Exercise creates the exact circumstances that maximize how much your body absorbs from the fabric against it.

Here's what activewear is actually made of, why the timing of wearing it matters so much, and what to reach for instead.


What Activewear Is Made Of

Almost all conventional activewear is plastic. Polyester, nylon, spandex, and elastane make up the overwhelming majority of the athletic clothing market - and all four are synthetic fibers derived from petroleum.

The properties people buy activewear for come entirely from these synthetic materials. Moisture-wicking, four-way stretch, quick-dry performance, compression - these are engineered characteristics of plastic-based fabric. The same qualities that make synthetic activewear appealing to exercise in are the qualities that make it plastic.

This isn't a hidden ingredient or a trace contaminant. The garment itself, in its entirety, is a plastic product worn directly against the skin.


Why the Timing Matters

What makes activewear specifically concerning isn't just the material - it's when and how you wear it. Exercise creates a convergence of conditions that each independently increase how much your skin absorbs from what it's in contact with.

Your skin warms during exercise. Warmth increases the permeability of skin and accelerates the migration of chemical compounds from fabric into the body.

Your pores open. Physical activity and elevated body temperature open pores, reducing the barrier between the fabric's chemical finishes and the skin beneath.

Your blood flow elevates. Increased circulation near the skin's surface means anything absorbed is carried into the body and distributed more quickly.

And you sweat. This is the critical factor - and it deserves its own explanation.


The Sweat Problem

Sweat is not a passive byproduct of exercise. It actively participates in the absorption process.

Synthetic activewear carries chemical finishes, synthetic dyes, anti-odor treatments, and processing agents on the surface of the fabric. Sweat interacts with these compounds, and rather than simply evaporating, it can dissolve and carry them into skin that is - at that exact moment - warm, open-pored, and highly absorptive.

The result is that you're not just wearing plastic. You're wearing it under the precise conditions that maximize how much of its chemical load ends up in your body. A synthetic shirt worn to sit at a desk is a low-level exposure. The same shirt worn through an intense workout is a fundamentally different situation.


The Shedding Problem

Beyond what your skin absorbs, activewear is also among the highest-shedding fabrics you own.

The tight, engineered weave that gives synthetic activewear its stretch and performance also makes it shed microfibers readily - during wear, and in far greater quantities during washing. Each laundry cycle can release hundreds of thousands of synthetic microfibers, which enter the water supply and eventually the food chain.

So activewear contributes to microplastic exposure on two fronts simultaneously: what it transfers into your skin while you wear it, and what it sheds into the environment - and ultimately back into the food and water supply - every time you wash it.


What to Wear Instead

Natural fibers solve the problem at the source - there's no synthetic chemical load to absorb and no plastic microfibers to shed.

Merino wool is the standout for activewear. It's naturally moisture-wicking, temperature-regulating, odor-resistant, and performs genuinely well under exertion - it was doing what synthetic activewear claims to do long before synthetic activewear existed. For many people it outperforms polyester on the exact properties polyester is marketed on.

Organic cotton works well for lower-intensity movement and everyday athletic wear. It's breathable and comfortable, though it holds moisture more than merino, so it's better suited to yoga, walking, and casual wear than high-sweat training.

Tencel and other wood-pulp-derived fibers offer a soft, moisture-wicking, breathable option that biodegrades and doesn't carry the synthetic chemical profile of petroleum-based fabric.

The practical approach is to prioritize what you sweat in most and wear closest to your skin. Base layers, sports bras, leggings, and everyday training tops are the highest-contact, highest-absorption items - start there. You don't need to replace everything at once; you need to replace the pieces that spend the most time against warm, open-pored skin.


The Bigger Picture

The logic here extends beyond the gym. The principle - that warmth, sweat, and prolonged skin contact increase absorption - applies to anything you wear against your skin for extended periods. But activewear concentrates all of those factors into a single category of clothing, worn precisely when your body is most receptive to absorbing what it's in contact with.

That's what makes it the right place to start. Not because it's the only synthetic clothing worth reconsidering, but because it's where the conditions for absorption are at their peak - and where switching to natural fibers delivers the most immediate reduction in exposure.
