Once these particles are small and light enough, wind lifts them into the atmosphere.
A Global Journey
Airborne microplastics don't stay put. High-altitude air currents carry them across thousands of kilometers, and many attach to the very water droplets that form clouds. When those clouds produce rain, the plastic falls with it.
This is why microplastics turn up in places no human activity could explain - isolated mountaintops, protected forests, and remote islands. The plastic didn't come from there. It rained down from somewhere else entirely.
Why It Reaches Your Plate
Plastic rain isn't just an environmental problem happening far away. It lands on agricultural fields, settling onto the crops we eat and seeping into the soil. It falls into the rivers, lakes, and reservoirs that feed our water supply.
This is one of the reasons microplastics appear in food that never touched plastic packaging, and in tap water everywhere. The contamination enters the system upstream, long before it reaches your kitchen.
What You Can and Can't Control
The uncomfortable truth is that you cannot control the rain, and you cannot fully escape environmental microplastics. They are, at this point, part of the global background.
But that doesn't mean nothing you do matters. The largest, most concentrated exposures for most people still come from sources within their control: the water they drink, the food storage and cookware they use, and the synthetic fabrics they wear against their skin all day. Reducing those meaningfully lowers your overall exposure, even against a backdrop of plastic rain.
